It's a small rectangular red and white sign which says "Cyclists please dismount".

No-one's going to come running out and put a gun to your head, so for heaven's sake, why the hullabaloo?

I know. It's a 'Saturday afternoon boredom killer' like last Saturday's 'Should I jump the red light at the left turn' effort.

If you want to know my opinion, the really pathetic signs are the ones which say "New Road Layout". ??? Any competent roaduser would use their eyes and brain to assess the road layout and change their plans accordingly.
The golden rules of using the public highway are "Never assume anything, expect anything, and everyone else is an idiot".

if that's all it is, then it's not needed ;)

Actually reading this thread and answers makes me realise there may be a reason for the signs and also one of the "please" in one of them..

Possibly some may dismount but I would guess most wouldn't bother

I just thought it was something to do with it being a car dominated country and the people who put these signs out or put bollards down on the road during road works are people who don't appreciate cycling or know anything about cycling.

Its the Liability culture we live in today. The council are covering their donkey. If a cyclist can't use the lane and subsequently, however unlikely has an accident they can't sue the council. That plus all the other reasons posted above.

Good point.

Still annoying though. Like I said one rule for them, another bodged job for pedestrians and another one for car drivers. I've always been a bit amused at how long some of the "new road layout ahead" signs get left up for.

It is clearly a serious mistake, since it is aimed at cyclists who can't see that the bike lane is closed.

So it should be in braille

Most of the "CYCLIST DISMOUNT"s in my area are not at roadworks; they are permanent, mounted on a post and coloured blue.

The real message they are intended to give out, is too many words to fit on a rectangular sign, so perhaps I should supply the full wording here. It is:
"CYCLISTS YOU ARE NOW APPROACHING THE END OF THAT NICE COMFORTABLE AND 'PROTECTED' BIT OF TARMAC CALLED A 'CYCLE PATH' AND ARE ABOUT TO COME OUT ON ONE OF THOSE NASTY HORRIBLE THINGS CALLED A 'ROAD' WHICH YOU OF COURSE CAN'T COPE WITH, ANYWAY YOU SHOULDN'T BE ON IT AT ALL SINCE YOU DON'T PAY ROAD TAX. SO WHY DON'T YOU JUST P*** OFF BACK ONTO THE NICE NARROW CYCLE PATH WHERE YOU CAME FROM?"
But as I said, too many words to fit on a sign.

It is therefore an information sign telling everyone that cyclists do on occasion get off their bikes, strange as this concept may seem to us.
Aha! A new, excellent, and entirely appropriate interpretation of these signs, which I must confess hadn't occurred to me. Perhaps we ought to have a few more of them:
CYCLISTS GET THERE QUICKER
CYCLISTS CAUSE LESS POLLUTION
CYCLISTS KEEP FIT
CYCLISTS EASE CONGESTION
and of course:
CYCLISTS DO PAY ROAD TAX YOU KNOW.

Any aspiring sign-painters volunteering?

Cycling - JUST DO IT!

I don't have a picture, but there are currently roadworks on the fancy segregated cycleway that goes from roughly King's Cross to Tottenham Court Road. There is a circular, blue "cycles only" sign marking the diversion (which is one coned-off lane of the road).

A stupid sign.

With or withut it I'd just ride with the traffic, making sure it couldn't overtake.

I do like the idea of getting 50 or so cyclists to push their bikes through the road works at rush hour though!
