Professor Asker Jeukendrup's research group are currently undertaking a cycling study at the University of Birmingham which is investigating the relationship between body composition and the amount of carbohydrate you use during cycling. The rationale for the study is to see if the current recommendation of 60g of carbohydrate per hour is suitable for all cyclists, not just those around the 70-75kg weight range.

So what will you have to do?

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be required to complete a VO2max test, two 2hr cycling sessions (at usual training pace) in which you drink either water or a glucose drink and a detailed analysis of your body composition on our DEXA scanner.

So what are the benefits of taking part in this study?

In return for participating, you will receive feedback on your fitness, VO2max and power. We will also inform you of your ability to burn carbohydrates from a drink, as well as give you feedback as to your body composition with our state of the art DEXA scanner. Depending upon the outcome of the study we should be able to optimise your drinking strategy.

So who are we looking for?

We are looking for both male and female cyclists/triathletes aged around 18-50 years, with a minimum of 2 years cycling experience. You will need to train at least 3 times a week for more than 2hrs a day. Your body weight should be below 68kg. The main trials will take place at Birmingham University in the early morning, so you should probably live within a 1 hour commuting distance to realistically be able to take part.

So tempting just for the DEXA scan, but I've promised Rachel I'd do her study in September.
