Cyclocross or MTB & Road Bike?

I was just about to buy a road-bike (hopefully the Triban 3 red if they get any in) when my MTB gave up the ghost (rear derailleur snapped off... http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/my-derailleur-broke-clean-off.135619/)

Would I be better spending £300 on a Triban 3 road bike and £109 on a basic MTB or getting a cyclocross bike like http://www.evanscycles.com/products/roux/conquest-2300-2013-cyclocross-bike-ec051745#features for £499?

Do not waste your money on a £109 mtb, it'll be a heavy piece of pig iron you'll never want to ride twice. And probably comes with a sticker like this...

... if your looking for a bike to handle a bit of road and off road riding the Conquest looks like a good deal.

Obsessively checking the Decathlon website paid off and I've now been able to order the Red Triban 3

So that answered my dilemma - the next task is to find a MTB which will probably be the Rockrider 5.1 from Decathlon for £160.

nowt wrong with a rockrider 5.1 for the money. I wouldn't want to ride down any real mountains on one but for towpaths and sustrans stuff it will be fine.

Yes, that's all I'll need it for.

I live in Essex, home Hadleigh Farm and the Olympic course MTB but no other discernible hills or mountains of any kind And you can't ride the course unless you have some trail certificates from other centres.
