EDIT here... i thought the sign was a no cycling sign .....

I know that stretch of road and it is clearly marked on the slip roads that with cycle warning signs. It is a very busy road ( i am not sure if it is a m class road google is not helping ) He might have had the right to cycle there but given the nature of the road i would not even consider it.

I know that stretch of road and it is clearly marked on the slip roads that no cycling is allowed on it ( M class road i guess), so i just wonder why he was cycling on it at all?

It irrelevant now but that sign (the bike in the red triangle) is to warn drivers that cyclists may be present, presumably on the cycle track crossing it doesn't actually ban cyclin but as you point out why would you want to. Its interesting to see that the driver has been arrested. RIP.

Yep. The triangle is a warning sign. Circular signs are generally directed at the road user specifically. So the red circle with the bike means YOU must not cycle. The read triangle means WARNING there may be cyclists. A little further up and you'll see a cycle path which bisects the road.

Very sad news though. Rest in piece.

I think there have been 4 deaths this year in total so far. I know of one very serious crash in Bournemouth too. That guy survived according to the report. Another reason for us all to contact the media (as I said in the recent Campaign thread).. we need to try and raise some awareness.

RIP to the man, and condolences to his family.

Mrs IRW and I cycled along the pathway (which is also at points a designated NCN cycle route) that runs parrallel to the Northbound carriageway along that stretch of the A38 from Lichfield to Derby just last Monday.

It might as well be a motorway the way the vehicles go along there!

I consider myself a fairly competentant cyclist, but there's no way I would ride along the actual carriageway.

The cyclist involved is Pat Kenny, a member of the 300,000 mile club. I have seen him a fair few times on a tricycle wearing a faint ie dirty and faded hi-viz jacket backing up the traffic on the A38. I suspect he went on this dual carriageway daily. I think it was only a matter of time before we heard this news.

I have cycled many times along the cycle track alongside the A38 and would never go on the main carriageway - traffic flows as fast as on a motorway and some of the slip roads are very short - and it is frightening enough to be on the cycle track.

My sympathies go to his family.

Driven along that stretch of road many times; the speed and volume of the traffic make it extremely dangerous for cyclists; I for one wouldn't contemplate cycling on it, whether it be legal to do so or not.

All the same very sad news; thoughts are with family & friends at what must be a very difficult time.
