Daft question about public transport...

Can you take dogs on public transport like buses and trains and do you have to pay for them if you can?

I'm still wrestling with ditching my car you see.

I know you can take Dogs on Trains, i oftern see lots of them on my commute to london from Essex, oh no thats most of the women on there!!!!

But yes you can take dogs on Trains.

When I lived in London I saw a dog get on the tube then get off a few stops later. I was sure it knew where it was going.

When I was a Ticket Inspector on Severn Valley Railway, we used to have an informal competition each day of "find the dog". People might try and avoid buying a ticket for their dog, and hide the dog! But the ticket was £1 and was really a sort of insurance requirement. A basket with a coat over it, and the coat sort of moving, usually gave the game away somewhat.

Large Teddy Bears need a ticket on trains, otherwise they get asked to leave the train at the next station!

You can in manchester- for child's fare. Or at least you could.

And they travel free on trains.

Yeah, he's 35Kg so even lifting him up is out of the question, especially as he becomes a black wriggling mess of paws because he doesn't like it. It's probably more the train we'd use but handy to know if he can go on the bus as well. of course whether he will or not is an entirely different question. I'll try him on the train first.

You can if they're guide dogs.

So put a hi-viz jacket on him and wear some dark glasses.

As far as buses go, there is only a legal obligation to carry assistance dogs. Most operators will generally allow other dogs, but the driver has discretion and can refuse. There are some operators that will make a small charge.

Thank you. Seems to be fairly standard, from what I could glean, that it is at the drivers discretion and Arriva runs most of the buses around here so those T&C's apply.
