Daisy Waugh in the Sunday Times magazine today; "Hey, cyclists! Are you still out there? I forgot to mention the thing about how you don't even pay road tax. So shove over, why don't you? Gerroff the road, and take your Lycra panty-pads with you. Nobody likes a free loader."
I've just e-mailed at her at daisy.waugh@sunday-times.co.uk ;
I appreciate that your column in the Sunday Times magazine is only meant to be a bit of light hearted amusement, but the 'punchline' of today's, as usual, dull article was diminshed even more by your failure to have got the facts right.
You wrote; "I forgot to mention the thing about how you don't even pay road tax". There's no such thing as 'road tax'. You're thinking of Vehicle Excise Duty, the tax disc, or 'car tax' if that's what you want to call it. All roads, apart from Motorways and some Trunk Roads, are paid for out of council tax. Most of us, including the lycra brigade, pay council tax. Even if we don't, the roads are for the use of all of us.
Personally, I like my humour to be funny, but you seem to manage on a weekly basis to attempt it by being bigoted, hateful, and factually inaccurate. No doubt you will take great comfort in knowing that the cyclists you hate so much will be harassed, endangered and maimed on a daily basis thanks to your support of the "Geroff the road...." culture perpetuated by your desperate attempts at light hearted journalism. But then perhaps I'm just being 'thin-skinned'.
