Blocking the stream at one end of the garden is a large branch from some unidentified tree upstream. It's got to come out but it's too dangerous to do now as the water flow is too fast for anyone to get in there & start roping the branch ready for it to be pulled out. If anyone went in and they lost their footing (indeed I doubt they'd actually keep their footing) they'd be a goner. The fast flow is gradually eating away at the bank of the stream on the neighbour's side. - bit slumping off & falling into the stream. Not good.

You're worried? We have a brook running under our house. When the water is really high, as it was on Friday night, the boulders start to rumble downstream, which is rather alarming to hear when you're lying in bed.

We've had two floods since we moved here five years ago, both caused by debris from further upstream getting lodged and buliding up a mat of rubbish. Luckily it just flows around the house, which is built quite high above the surrounding land and flows on down the road to flood our neighbours. We were retrieving bits of my timber collection from under parked cars for a couple of days last time.

Luckily we haven't flooded, but having a stream at the end of the garden, it's only a matter of time. I have woken up, looked out the bedroom window and screamed loudly in shock - as the water was right up to the house. Half-a-brick higher and it would have been inside.

Luckily the stream is an upstream tributary of a bigger river, so whilst the water can come up quickly it also goes down quickly. Much better than downstream where the water can take an age to drop in level.

I cursed the 1:8 up to my place when there was snow and ice, but it does place me nicely out of reach of the river. It's only a little river, but it floodss a goodly number of houses nearby. Levels appear to be receding now after rising worryingly fast yesterday.

A dam: I has one no more.

Mr Wafflycat did his manly duty this morning and removed the branch from the stream. Big branch, many forks, much testosterone. He is my hero
