What things do you use as reference to indicate danger ?

Some of mine,

The sound of a "Dump Valve", it signifies someone whose brain is smaller
than his limited talent behind the wheel.

Council estates, the driving deteriorates markedly I have noticed, the peds are more agressive and apt to step into the road.

Building work, skips, vans, a board advertising its being done as there will usually be all manner of crap in the road.

Farms, farmers have tractors, dogs, cows and a refreshingly ambivalent attitude to road users, they coat the road with poo (well the cows do) and it eats the road surface.

Local Shops, riding past ours which is opposite the pub is fraught with danger, people step out, cars pull out, there isnt much room and cars drive along the pavement, the surface is crap, I take a detour.

BMW's, mainly X5's like the one that overtook the stationary coach I was passing coming the other way but went anyway forcing me into the kerb, goign to have a word with the bitch when I see her next as its right near her home.

All of the above apart from the dogs. I've never had any trouble from them.

I never knew that!!

I wonder if a load of cowshit would get the moss up from my drive.

All the above but not dogs. Had a couple of near misses with cats though.

Dogs, never had a problem but sometimes they make me jump when they get territorial and start barking without warning.

I have Alpacas on my Journey (not in Peru though) and they run quite quickly, sometimes it looks like they are going to jump over the hedge, bet not many can claim Alpacas !

Also,

Badgers, Foxes, Hares, Rabbits, Pheasants (had a coming together with one) and a daft tart in a Punto that uses the singletrack road like a stage on the RAC rally, 15 mph signs and ice, this mornign she was hoofing along and she always looks surprised to see me, every morning, I though humans were characterised by the ability to learn, even rodents manage it but not young women in battered Black puntos !

Well, not always. I sometimes hear the sound of a horn when I'm sitting in my flat but that only tells me there's a minicab driver in the vicinity.

In his minicab, not just walking up the road for a pack of cigs. or something.

I would agree with those. I don't have too many problems with dog walkers, well twice in total actually. Overtaking cars coming the other way is insightful, it doesn't happen very often but it is an extreme danger and one likely to get a cyclist somewwere killed. I've had to swerve off on a few occasions.

On a quiet country road the week I heard a motor behind me, a couple of seconds later I heard a gentle horn about 10 secs or more later he passed giving plenty of room. A driver actually using his horn properly in that case it was a sign of a good driver

I'm always wary when I'm in traffic and the driver of the car behind hangs back to follow. It's great not to feel the pressure of someone being desperate to get past but I also know that I'm then in the nice enticing gap that all the cretins can see has an absence of car but not the presence of bike.

I was once hit really hard by someone in a Golf desperate to get across the road ahead of the car following behind me.

Bus stops, schools, tube stations, pubs etc etc etc

Confuses the hell out of me when they do that.

It's not uncommon for drivers in France to pip the horn before passing, it's weird at first.
