I will be cycling through France at the end of the month and really want my wife and kids to be able to follow me via GPS. Anyone got any tips on the cheapest data deals?

Google latitude i reckon.

Cheers. I've used endomondo in the past and also apple find my phone but both still need data roaming turned on.

Which network are you with? We were in France in February. My wife is with Vodafone and has a pretty generous package in terms of minutes and data - more than she ever uses/needs. Vodafone offer was £3 per day and everything used came out of your normal package, ie no further charges. I liked it because it capped our costs. We could phone home, use the internet, text home, knowing exactly what the cost was. Most networks seem to have changed their offering because of the new European legislation on reducing roaming costs.

I'm on three and they do something similar with a daily european roaming charge.
actually now i think about my phone never worked as a satnav abroad.

O2 iirc are now 1.50 a day max. I think there was a cheaper one possibly T-mobile.

Oh and you may need to turn data on manually when roaming. my HTC switches data of automatically when I am overseas.

We had an O2 phone with us as well, but decided Vodafone was the better offer. I think O2 only offered data - not the phonecalls and text as well. So it would depend what you needed it for.

Vodafone looks pretty good. Going to run data usage for a couple of days to get an idea of what I'm using.

I'm with O2. It was £1.99 per day when I was in Rome last month. If you were going to be abroad for more than a few weeks, it may be cheaper to buy a French Sim card

also worth using Maps With Me. Download app to phone, then download the countries you want (do all that part via home wifi). You then have as superb mapping system which does not need data turned on. Excellent if you are just a bit lost and want an accurate idea of where you are
