When I was teaching I would sometimes refer to 'the war'. It was interesting which war the students thought I was refering to.
To me 'The War' (or 'The Great War') is the 1914-18 war in reference to timber used in the trenches, and the effects on art and design from the Arts and Crafts period through to the Art Deco period, and the Great Depression.
To many of the students it was the Falklands or the Gulf war.

To me it would be WW2.

This is where all those bayby pictures pay off. Wheel them out the next time she wants to fill the house with friends. You'll not see them again!

I was 13, and had just managed to get the 14 year old gorgeous girl from up the road to come back one afternoon, and we were getting on well. I remember thinking I might actually be in with a chance here. Then my dad decided to enter the room wearing the tea cosy on his head and holding a large metal spoon and then proceeded to do his pope impression which included blessing us both. I very nearly died on the spot.

Funny thing is, a few months later, when I was having a good old snog with her she said she thought my dad was really funny and could she meet him again!
