Are these still a good bike they seem very expensive for the component set on them or are dawes living off their name?

I also like this one as it's 105 groupset

That Dawes is a steel frame so potentially more comfortable. Are they living off their name? Probably.

Ive found Dawes bikes excellant value for money in the past and the paint work even on the mid range bikes excellant unlike Specialized, GT and Trek paintwork really poor on the bottom / mid range bikes.

I d buy another Dawes

At another level/cycle type, my wife has a Dawes Kalahari.
Its a great shame because i have a soft spot for Dawes..perhaps based on older perceptions that don't hold any more, but although its heavy (a bit too heavy really) and well built, been no problem mechanically, the paintwork is shockingly easy to scratch.
I don't know if thats a common theme with them, apparently not going by Yahudas experience...but mines a little disappointing.

I recently went to look at a Dawes Century SE and was disappointed, I thought the paint application to the frame was poor, the decals were not applied with care and generally it looked sub standard when compared to the Genesis Equilibrium 20 I had seen the week before.

Whereas my Vantage has a very good finish to the paintwork, and is a good reliable bike.

I like their touring bikes, although I prefer a couple others to the galaxy at the upper end of the prices. The discovery bikes seem to be good quality in that I have quite a few friends with them of different ages and I've not heard a bad word for them yet (other than being a little heavy).

Where I think their range does fall down is that their road bikes seem very dated, and there is better value out there. I think they've tried to address it this year with the bikes like the century se, but they're not there yet.

If I could ask them to make one change to their range, I would love a disk brake'd galaxy though
