I am not buying a new touring bike. I am NOT buying a new touring bike!!!! I have no money and only children left to sell, it just ain't gunna happen.

But if someday I did.... I could spend £1200+ on a Hewitt Cheviot or around the same amount on a Super Galaxy (on sale).

I like the idea of buying a Hewitt, supporting smaller British builders and his whole fitting system.  But is it going to be a better bike? I've always wanted to do a JOGLE on a Galaxy... if you were going to choose between buying one of the two brand new, with the idea of it lasting you out, which would it be?

It'll probably be a better bike because of the specialist service and attention to detail/customisation that you'll get from Hewitts compared to buying a stock-standard bike.

If they're the same price, then the Hewitt would be/was my choice.  Though I'd be surprised if you couldn't find the Galaxy cheaper.  Even if the Hewitt was dearer it would still be my preference, every off the peg bike I've bought has had parts changed before they've worn out, either for comfort, suitability or vanity.  This wasn't the case with my Hewitt, I'd chosen every part myself.

Also the Galaxy, like all off the peg bikes, comes as an inflexible package.  Paul Hewitt will add or take off whatever you want.  I had mine without a saddle (To use my own) No racks because I already had some and the front wheel built around my SON dynamo.  The price of the bits not used were simple and fairly knocked off the price.
