Really not my sort of thing, but strangely hypnotic in the end and watched it all, not sure whether it was Joely Richardson (always had a soft spot for her), Eddie Izzards flouncing comedy baddie or anticipation of Brian Cox (usually like his stuff). Definately not the hungry Aloe Vera/Thistle hybrid plants killing people when moving at 1mph!

..was hilarious at times. The Triffids themselves do resemble desperately unfrightening and slow moving Aloe Vera plants.

As a previous poster mentioned, was very much in the style of 'Survivors'. Entertaining nonetheless and we'll see what happens this evening.

Thought the original TV series was more scary with the mutant celery sticks but then, I was a lot younger. If you haven't read Wyndham's book then I'd recommend that.

Thought the standard of acting not up to usual BBC drama standard - either of Joely Richardson or Eddie Izzard are capable of more.

SPOILER ALERT
Wasn't the solution sea water in the 1959 movie?

It it me, or is every male dressed as if they want to go on a motor bike journey with Euan McGregor and Charlie Whatsisname....apart from Izzard.

The Belstaff Trialmaster waxed cotton motorbike jacket is standard post-TEOTWAWKI clothing, didn't you know? Wossname in I Am Legend wore one too.

Triffids is a peculiarly British cultural phenomenon - it's the thought lurking at the back of every gardener's mind "What if my garden went bad? What if the shrubbery took umbrage and came for revenge?" Scary stuff indeed!

You know, if they'd made a drama utterly faithful to the original book, word for word, scene for scene, exactly the same dialogue and everything - it would have been ruthlessly panned just the same. The book isn't all that inviolate, even if it was what made Wyndham's name (it wasn't his best work by any means). And viewers would realise at once just how dated it is. Well, it would be, the book came out in 1951.

Some might say, the 2009 offering can't do worse than the 1960s Hollywood version, although in my opinion that one wasn't so bad either. Except the ending. Except the dreadful ending. Wyndham has produced his own clumsy dea ex machina, hasn't he? (viz. The Chrysalids). No need to create any more for him.

So, I shall await whatever 'solution' awaits the 2009 Triffids, with just a little trepidation...

Not seen that film, but if it was, then it wasn't very true to the book either. I love the book, I like most John Wyndham. I watched last night, while I knitted, tonight I think I'll watch the June Whitfield evening instead....

Why do they have to change so much? It could very well have been brought a little up to date - the idea of triffid oil as biofuel is good (although in the book I think the oil was simply hailed as a wonderful all purpose mechanical/food product), without having to muck about with Bill's and Jo's backstories, and the plane crash and all that. And I suppose it'll all end happily and tidily, because a modern audience can't cope with a hanging ending...

I wouldn't mind if they wrote something new, with difference characters and a similar theme (after all, the triffids just fill the usual zombie/virus niche), but I'm annoyed that they hang it on a book it deviates so much from.

Now, if they could do a decent, thoughtful adaptation of The Chrysalids....

I like the day of the triffs and Chryslids, They could of stook more closley to the book the BBC 1970s / 1980 version was better then this, lol is this going to happen in 2012 when the world is supposed to be screwed.... LOL

The spot I have for her isn't particularly soft.

It feels like a 30 minute program which they have dragged out for 2 evenings.
