To me, as a road user, the more alarming thing about the leaderboard for that segment, as well as others down the north side of the Kirkstone, is that they are mostly days in May which look very much like Fred Whitton sportive days. So plenty of people go down there at not far short of his speed, but surrounded by other people doing the same. And the road is *not* closed. Most locals wouldn't go near the Fred Whitton route in a car on the day of the event, but unwitting visitors do. As a third party, whether in a car or on a bike, I'm much more concerned by people in sportives - "not a road race; honest ..." racing down it than one person on a normal day.
