Decathlon entry level road bike - what great value!

Dropped in to the Stockport shop for a look around and Gti Junior was whizzing around on a BTwin Triban 3: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-id_8167038.html

Really quite amazing value for £299! Ali frame and carbon forks, perfect for a young lad who wants to race around but isn't likely to take the best care of it and may have the odd fall or chain/spoke interface!
We were seriously tempted but decided to have a look on Eblag first to see what's going for similar money.

I do not think you will get a better new road bike for the money, i was in my "local" decathlon last week drooling over the carbon bike for less than a grand with askiums and rival groupset.

I am going to have a look at one tomorrow My only concern is I'd miss the 34T, even with the granny ring, I've currently got on my hybrid for all the mountains locally. I suppose fitting a long cage derailleur is an option? Would these work?

Just bought my youngest (12) one, fab kit for the price, he's lovin' it!

The triban is liable to be a lot lighter than your hybrid so i should not worry about it untill you have tried, and i do not see why it would not work, you would need a longer chain as well.

It's a 51, which is the smallest sized Triban 3 they do - comes with 650c wheels. My lad's a smallish 12 y/o and we had to cut a bit of the bottom of the seat post to get the seat to sit low close to the seat-tube. ( a tad shorter stem would help too) but it fits him fairly well and he goes like the clappers on it!
It has some nice touches for such a cheap steed like the rubber sleeves on the cables that protect the frame from rubbing. The welding's pretty fair and the paint job's superb.

One of my riding buddies has an earlier budget B'twin road bike and it's been superb, reliable and cosemetically sound after many years of year-round use.

I'll echo what I've said many times in other threads . Bought one of these at Christmas "Just for the commute" I'm now in a club and riding it all the bloomin time Excellent value for money.

The wheels are the weak point so I replaced them once they were out of true, but aside from that everything has been grand for just under 3000 miles. Decathlon are good with the customer service afterwards and the folks at the Stockport branch at least know what they are doing.

Easy recommendation for an entry level bike.
