I've got a Dino PC desktop that's eighteen months old and has always behaved impeccably, I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 which has always been rock solid and no problems. Twice, once last night and once this morning, I've had problems starting it, It's shown the initial start up screen, the one with the motherboard name on it, sat there for ages before going to the login screen without loading the keyboard, I've had to restart it several times before I could log in. Now it is back to its normal self and starting no problem. Now I normally work on the if its not broke don't try and fix it premise, but I'm sat here trying to make my mind up, do I try and fix it by trying to repair/ reinstall grub or do I just leave it

leave it and call it a one off glitch... if it happens again it's an occasional glitch... if it becomes a problem, fix it.

As its been started and shut down with out problems several times today I'm inclined to leave it for now, I'll just make sure all backups are kept up to date

If you can see the startup screen (the one with the motherboard details and stuff), and it hangs there, then the problem may have nothing to do with our o/s at all. It might be the bios. Do you have a bootable CD or USB key with a linux distro on it?

PSU a possibility so cold boot into the bios and check the voltages on the 3.3/12/5v and make sure they're not too close to 95% of the specified value. That's cold as in left off overnight not a straight reboot

I was wondering if it might be hardware, I still have the installation CD. As its been behaving itself and I've had no reoccurance I'm going to leave it alone for now, just do what I said previously in this thread and keep my back ups up to date.

I don't have the technical know how to do that, if it comes to doing that I will have to find a repair man.

Er Press the del key when the bios screen is displayed at boot up and one of the menus should include a list of the voltage readings and the cpu/system temperature.
I wouldn't have suggested it if it involved volt meters
