We have a Jack Russell/Lots of other things cross - he was from a rescue centre in Alsager.

He's a lovely little dog - very affectionate, quite playful, and good with the children.

I'd recommend the rescue centre route too - be honest with the people there about what you want from the dog, how much exercise you can give it &c and you shouldn't go far wrong.

punky my nephews all have severe asthma and they have a labradoodle, they've never had any problems with their asthma attacks i think they were originally bred for asthmatics

whatever dog you do decide to get, get it chipped, neutered (if getting a pup) and take it to obedience classes there's usually a puppy class to get them into the swing.

i have a border terrier/jack russell she's a rescue which i got from the vets as she'd been found abandoned - it's been a learning curve. ;)

boxer dog - eternal giant puppies, will dash up and down the park madly for half an hour and collapse. Otherwise why not get something wee enough to go on the bike with you?

You could ask to test drive some benign wee mutt at the local rescue home - they do get puppies too.

That doesn't narrow it down, I once saw a guy with a full-grown golden retriever in a blue plastic crate on the rack of his bike. They were going through heavy traffic in Kew but the dog seemed unperturbed.

I'd echo the Ruby Cavalier Spaniel suggestion. They're wonderful.

Labradoodles need a lot of investigating, we have a first generation cross, the bitch was a small labrador and the father was a large standard poodle. Ours is bloody massive, its like living with a small horse in the house ! He does have a lovely temperament but is very excitable. He has a scruffy wispy coat that sheds a fair amount, i think the ones for allergy sufferers are bred back again with a poodle to give it more of a curly/furry coat.

He looks like Asterixs' avatar !!

poodles don't have the double coat that most dogs have and it's the double coat that usually trigger allergies, I heard the labradoodle was first bred as a non-allergenic guide dog.
