There is no progress bar when running defrag on Vista. Is there an option to enable one? Doesnt even tell you which file its currently working on. Only an unhelpful vague message saying 'this may take a few minutes or a few hours'.

You could try Defraggler - on my XP it's a lot quicker than the Windiows defrag and does keep a running total of the fragmented items. On the new one you go into the menu and select quick defrag.

Id simply ditch Vista, its a bloated OS, you'd be better of going back to XP or upgrading to Win7. As far as defragging goes, I've always found the one built into Tune-Up Utilities to be very effective.

Think you'll find that in vista (and 7 for that matter) that it's scheduled to run on a regular basis so there's no real benefit of running it yourself unless you disabled the schedule or have just freed up a significant chunk of disk space on a fairly full drive in which case you'll want a defragmenter that will move files to defragment the free space as well.
