Say I use white spirit to degrease - what's the best strategy for dealing with / getting rid of the dirty left over fluids?

ASC1951: how do you clean your chain?
I am another one for the Mickle method. IME degreasing your chain makes it wear faster and go rusty, as well as getting into your cassette and jockey wheel bearings.

I wouldn't use degreaser anywhere on a bike. You can keep the whole thing as sparkly as you need with generic baby wipes and, for the chain, an occasional drop of light machine oil applied to the inside edge of each link.
