Dehumidifiers and bike grease/lubes

Okay, thought long and hard as to whether this is a stupid question (and it probably is) but as the title suggests I'm using a dehumidifier for a temporary damp problem in the house and am thinking about one for the shed.

My question is, are dehumidifiers likely to draw away lube, even grease, from the various bikes I own? Knowing from first-hand the little knooks and crannies that the dehumidifier is able to draw away moisture, I'm concerned that this could be the case with various helpful moistures!

I'm pretty sure that unless the lube is water-based, you should be absolutely fine. BTW, if you get a dehumidifier for your shed, get a Peltier cooler one rather than a compressor one. The peltiers work quite well at nearly freezing temperatures whereas compressor ones don't.

Nice one Slow, will remember that and if we don't 'speak' again before, a very happy Yuletide/Xmas to you and yours.

That would have to be one air tight shed or a VERY large machine. Mind you with the amount of rain we have at the moment a VERY large machine and lots of them may help.^_^

We run one in our house all through the winter months to reduce condensation and damp problems. Watch the electricity bill though as they can use more than a couple of hundred watts and if they are on constantly they are not that cheap to run. Most units also have a defrost cycle for really cold environments like sheds and unheated garages etc.

We bought one yesterday and have been using it in our damp lean to conservatory today to dry the washing and dry it out. (Which is also where I store my bike). I'm intending to move it into the main bit of the house to reduce some of the condensation there too.

....and no, it won't dry out the grease. Grease is basically thick oil, there's no water involved. It does dry out and harden over years as the more volaitle fractions evaporate but it's a very slow process.

Now if I am correct they draw the moisture out of the air, if that is the case you will need a reasonable airtight shed to make any difference.
