What would YOU do here?

Rode my brand new Pinarello F2 today for the first time. Coming to the end of my ride, down a steep hill doing over 40, I was passed by a car who's driver chose to ignore the open space to his right and passed far too close to me, almost hitting m and missing me by millimetres. As it happens, he turned left, the way I had to go to get to my house. Down another steep hill, I got level with him on his left hand side and he swerved into me, forcing me up onto the pavement, luckily co-inciding with the dip for that owner's driveway. As I got back onto the road, he slowed until I was right behind him, gesturing him to pull over and he stamped on his brakes forcing me to hit the back of his tailgate and the deck and then he roared off. Disturbingly, I am pretty sure I know the driver but am only 98% certain. I went round to his house which is only a few yards from mine and the car wasn't there. It's not a car I have seen him in before but I don't think that means it's not him. Had it been there, I'd have had no hesitation in banging on his door and calling him out. As I was so sure I know it was a guy I've known for years I foolishly didn't bother with the reg.no. Now, I'm not certain it's actually the one I thought it to be.

The bike is scraped and brand, brand new but otherwise, no damage. None to me, despite hitting the back of his car and the ground.

What do people get out of this?

'Your a fat b***ard in a car, I'm enjoying myself on my bike, I have every right being here, go and crash and make your face even uglier.'

Hope you catch up with him eventually PaulB

Awful thing to happen at any time - let alone being out on your new bike. If the vehicle is local as you suspect, you will doubtless see it again soon which will give you chance to confirm (or otherwise) the identity of the driver and at least get the registration. The problem is the time lag - meantime you really could do with letting the police know what happened and photo the damage sustained so that if you do encounter the vehicle again soon out on the road, there's at least some record of this encounter for solicitors or whoverer to refer to.

Not a nice thing to happen, but....

Why try and overtake on the left (even if you have to pass the car, which I'd question if its likely you'll be slowing as soon as the hill ends)?

Sure, the drivers behaviour was poor, but I'd say that your own behaviour was also less than perfect. Obviously this doesn't excuse the driver, but might be worth considering to help avoid similar situations in the future....

Where does it say or insinuate I was trying to overtake on the left? I knew my actions would be scrutinised and I'd be found to be at fault. Always some nit-picker. I got level with him while he was virtually stationary due to a car coming the other way. It was inadvisable for me to go round his right then, don't you think? What should I have done; forgotten the criminally stupid driving and sat there behind him glaikit faced and gormless? That's not in my character.

If it is who you think it is, is there some history between you?
If it's a random 'attack' then that guy will seriously hurt some other unlucky cyclist soon, shame you didn't get any more details Paul, beggers belief what goes through these morons tiny minds

No 'history' as such between us. I'd call it a total non-history as he's one of those meffs who looks the other way if you cross his path in the street. You know the sort; won't speak to you or say anything even though our eldest kids are minutes apart, were born in the same unit and in the same class at the same school and he lived three doors down from us in our last house and lives a few houses away this time round. Looks at the ground if he sees me in the vicinity and as far as I remember, I've never heard him say one word. I wouldn't know if he was Geordie, Cockney, Irish or East Anglian since he's too tight and miserly to give anything away. Even his breath.

It's definitely the social disaster-area I suspected it was. His car wasn't there outside his house following on from our contretemps but it is now. I just drove past on the way back from the shop and whereas it wasn't there in the time it would have been earlier, he'd obviously decided not to be home. I'm no grass so the Archie won't be called though. I did shout at him that he'd certainly hear a lot more about this. And he will.

I'm not sure about not being a grass, at best it was hit and run, at worst, given he had two goes at you, it was assault.
