Just about surviving

Last December my ageing Dell Latitude D400 started with an intermittent touchpad/pointing stick problem. At first a restart and it would work. Then I needed to do a System Restore and it would work. Then I had to reinstall the driver. Eventually it stopped and nothing I did made any difference. It had even disappeared from device manager and I had to use an external mouse. I emailed a Dell help site and they suggested that maybe the connection cable had come adrift so I followed the instructions to strip it down to the touchpad connections and found nothing wrong. I tried virus checks. I even tried Panda Cloud. All to no avail.
Today it was running really slow so I did a Restart and there it was on the task bar, the icon for the touchpad.
It's now back and working. It's running faster than it has for months. Anyone got an explanation.
