Sorry to hear about that injury, Edge705. You have a very philosophical outlook, though.

Thanks Maz it was a very traumatic time I remember the pain was that intense at one point and I was convinced I would never walk again If anyone had good reason not to go back on the bike it was me but I did and I still ride a lot, in ache'ee pain most of the time, but content nevertherless^_^

i feel like , it was my fault for being hit by a car while cycling to work. my non cycling friends including wife seems to blame me because of my mode of transport.
They are conflating two issues here to achieve this opionion

The first is "There, but for the grace of dog go I!" They have been in the other driver's position and realise that it could have been them.
The second is "I'm a safe driver, me!"

They have no expererience of the "other side" to balance out their perspective.

If they are a "safe" driver ( and they KNOW that they are) and they could see themselves being in the same situation then , of course, it must be the "other side"s fault. On this occasion you are the "other side"

Don't worry about it, those with broader perpspectives or different worldviews know the "truth"

Sometimes though, it's best just to give in and do what makes your partner feel happier/less worried - Mrs. Admin is the same and won't let me leave the house without a helmet - despite the various discussions we've had about them over the years.<snip>

There must be a market for a 'Helmet-shaped Object' that could satisfy both sides of the argument. It will look the part, but disintegrate into a thousand small pieces when it hits the road, thus preventing injury.

It's a funny thing. If you'd been hurt in a car accident, you'd be getting nothing but sympathy. But as you're a cyclist people will always say 'Weeeeell, it is dangerous'.

My wife doesn't worry about me cycling. Our fathers are the same age (65). Mine has never exercised, whilst hers is a lifelong cyclist. Mine is overweight, inactive and limps due to a stroke, whilst hers is lithe, healthy and active! I think she wants me to be the latter.

this is what i thought. especially when the medical officer was asking me if i was wearing a helmet. i told her that wearing a helmet has nothing to do with my injury. for them its the ''what if'' that worries them a lot. it has only been 2 months that i fell off my bike and hurt my knee "my own fault". and same thing, i wasnt wearing a helmet. well, i thought if i was wearing one, it did not save me from my injuries.

I think the fact that you have had an accident has probably brought your wifes fears to the forefront of your mind and therefore your guilt is possibly based on how it makes her feel and therefore react. I dont know you and i hope the above is not presumptious but i do think you have answered your own quandry...get back on the bike cos you love it  ....wear a helmet if you think it will allay your loved ones fears. And try not to feel guilty for doing something you have every right to do or the accident itself. Would be glad to hear when your back on the bike/s (any one of the five) !!
