Been commuting on new bike for a month. Due to the expected cable-stretch, found the rear derailleur skipping. So, started fiddling with the barrel adjuster and the two Hi + Lo screws (retrospectively, I know that I shouldn’t have touched these), and after four hours last night and I gave up.

Visited Bike Doctor and similar websites this morning, and it looks like a piece of cake.

Why don’t bike shops tell you the basic elements of bike maintenance and fine tuning when you walk out with a new bike?

True, a surprising number don't even sell such cycle maintenance books. Then again, I hate bike dérailleur gears with a passion! Hub gears all the way!

I just recently had my front and rear gears overhauled an serviced/replaced.My last two spills were due to dodgy gearing chain jumping.Bloke in bikeshack did a great job for me but I reckon I was overcharged.

I can do stuff myself but I had to get bikeshack to replace the front chain ring and rear Derailleur.

I've never had a problem sorting out gears.....however it's a bit of a pain really. And as I live in the flat lands I now ride fixed!
However the trick I learnt for adjusting the rear, was to put the bike in to 2nd top, then adjust the barrel until the chain started to want to jump down a gear. 1/4 turn back and she should go up and down as smooth as posh tarts knickers at the hunt ball!
