I agree about Gervais' previous work but Derek just leaves me cold.
I just don't get it at all.
There's nothing remotely funny about it although many claim it's one of his funniest sit coms so far.

I agree, love his earlier stuff, less so recently (smug) but Derek is awful. Saw the one-off some time ago and switched over half way through.
A friend said to me this week that it's the greatest comedy of the century, that it's an homage rather than mocking, and that I've misunderstood it. I disagree.

What do you think?
This ^ although I am not sure its the greatest comedy of the century. Derek is at no point being mocked. Very genuine character if you can get past Gervais gurning which seems to make some feel awkward.

Gervais is clever but I've never found him funny. Excruciating perhaps but I guess that's exactly what he's aiming for.

I haven't caught up with the second series but i did enjoy the first series.

It was in no way mocking Derek in terms of his learning difficulties, the last episode explained (probably over explained) that Derek
more than any of the other characters understood what life was about. It touched on a lot of uncomfortable subjects , death, disability etc. unfortunately there weren't as many laugh out loud moments as his previous projects.

I don't like anything he's done. I just don't get what he's about or what's funny.
Each to their own.

RG tries to explain Derek here. He is basically an adult with child-like innocence who doesnt have the weight of the world bearing down on him, telling him he must conform to some pre agreed stereo type of what an adult is.
The problem for me is that every time I see RG interviewed he just seems too much like David Brent. maybe that is what Derek is all about, just trying to show the world he can do other stuff.

I respect his animal ethics stance and twitter persona but as a performer/comedian I don't get it at all, hated the office, never bothered with stuff since. I've limited experience with LD & but volunteered when younger at a Downs day centre and the odd bits of Derek I've seen seem more cheap & mocking than an affectionate homage.
