I'd think carefully about even bothering given the quantity of pesticides you are likely to need - so the 'land' is used by kids - no way.

Leave them. They are benificial wildlife in your garden. I have only ever once seen them be an issue in a client's garden when they colonised a planter that held two acers. The network of tunnels dried the soil out with alarming efficiency and the trees were kaput by the autumn.
Otherwise they are a delight. I don't get this 'kill it with chemicals because that's what grandad used to do' mentality. The kids are more likely to sniff up or injest the poisonous powder than have a problem with ants.
My youngest, when about 2-3, used to lie prostrate amongst the yellow meadow ants nests and 'fish' the soldiers out with a blade of grass. Hours of fun and never bitten once.
We live in enlightened tmes.

The same with snails. They're only after a bit of food. Pick them off and "redirect" them somewhere else. The sicko next door brags about crushing them. What a self-gratification artist he is!

I struggle to work it out... is the the first Wednesday after the third full moon after Easter Sunday... something like that. I wish they'd mark it on calendars.
