No. They essentially spot-weld it back with a laser. There's no cutting into the eyeball, the laser fires pulses through your pupil and you'll be off home later the same day.

My dad's had it happen twice spontaneously because of hereditary eye shape (I have it eek!) and made a full recovery both times.
Treatment can be a bit uncomfortable but Moorfields is the best.

I'm sorry and wish you all the very best at the hospital. At least they've got you in as an emergency, you will be given the best of treatment.
My husband had one a a couple of years ago, caught by chance when he had a FB in his eye. The consultant, who is incidentally mine, thought there was more to his symptoms and fortunately wasn't satisfied, then he asked us if we could get down to St Paul's in Liverpool right away. His was quite severe & required a band around the eye but you will probably be lucky and have laser treatment, which most of the other patients in the ward had. Mr Campfire was the only one requiring this operation.
You will also receive excellent follow up treatment and care. Just take care of yourself.
We were lucky to have Dr Hebbar & as I still see him every few months, he always asks about Mr C.
Our thoughts will be with you.

Thankfully it wasn't as feared. No detachted retina, just lots of bruising and bleeding at the back of the eye and optic nerve. No further treatment needed as it should heal by itself in a few days or so. My pupils are still dilated and I am having to wear my shades until the effects of the numerous eye drops dissipate. Also been given the all clear to continue riding from tomorrow. )

I'm a Registered Operating Department Practitioner in an Eye Hospital and learning to scrub and also to assist with these procedures which we call vitys as in Vitrectomy. We do them under local, local with sedation or GA.
