As a matter of interest how long does it take to fold a Brompton? On some commuter lines there are only about two minutes between stops: you might have to start unfolding before you've finished folding....

I think 10 to 20 seconds is a good standard, with many managing it under 10. Of course if you don't go for the whole fold, and just use the rear wheel flip under to stand it up and shorten it a touch, then about 3 seconds is all you need....

Not an owner myself. Yet. It's on the list.

if no luggage, quick. I ride with a rear bag, which is a bit more fiddly. And, of course, if you're riding with lots of luggage (front/rear/backpack) it's one unfolded bike with a bag on your back, vs four pieces of luggage if the bike's folded!

For my own part, I forgot how to fold/unfold mine within about 5 seconds of leaving the shop, and it took me a few goes to remember (it's very intuitive though).

It's very intuitive once you know what you are doing.
The first time you need to do the front wheel foldback....

I remember Mr Houtkop and myself both looking at it after I'd got the one I test rode home - we had to get the manual out!

i bet our european neighbours would laugh at the thought of being told to fold a bike up on a train. when i travelled on my old raliegh carrera fs thru holland, germany, belgium and france it was so easy in the trains and the ferry. i didn't even box it to go in the cargo hold of the plane to germany. they just took it as it was. the pain in the ass started when i got off the ferry at this end. had to cycle to the train station from the ferry (why not just extend the line to the ferry in the first place?) then i was shoved in a box carriage (no seats or anchor points and no doors at one side) to london then from london i had to cross over london to the euxbridge, i think, to catch virgin train to preston. they took it but with a bit of a fuss to the back of the train. from preston i had to stand with bike all way to local train station as no allocated areas for prams or bikes. every train i went on in the afore mentioned countries had dedicated cycle carriages and a stand for each bike which corresponded with the train ticket with a luggage rack above, awesome. we really are behind aren't we?

The trains that go between Nottingham <-> Derby (and on to Birmingham and Swansea - Arriva Trains I believe) are very bike friendly - 1/3rd of a carriage is dedicated to bicycles and wheelchairs.

There's a guy who get's on regularly with a folder, all neatly compacted. No idea why he bothers unless there's other public transport parts to his journey.

Possible - he also might not have bike parking at work & stow the bike under his desk, or he could need a folding bike for other reasons, and just use that as his commuter.

I tend to fold the Brompton whenever I'm on the train, because it's pretty easy, and you never know when a non-folder will need the dedicated spaces, however quiet the service may be normally.

I would "impress" distant Devon relatives with the magical Brompton folding bike at Christmas time - I kid you not. I should never have gotten rid of it (and the Birdy for that matter) as I don't have any other party tricks...

Has anyone perfected folding by loosening all the clamps and folding it as you tuck the rear wheel under? I started doing this about 2 years ago as prior to this I was doing each fold individually. Quick but still time consuming. It is so much quicker folding all at once - less than 5 seconds I'd say may be less and very satisfying if done on platform 8 at Kings Cross in rush hour I should imagine. This is where I had my Eureka! moment deciding I had to have a Brompton having seen a guy do just this in easily less than 5 seconds. Unfolding takes a few seconds more I find.
