Well my cleats where wearing down, got replacements ready and thought about replacing them last night, but i didn't.

So on the way home, climbing up at hill at about 18mph out of the saddle, right foot just comes out of my pedal and i go crashing down. BUT i managed to hold it, my foot landed on the ground hard and my heel hurts now but i didn't have to stop and didn't crush my manhood on the top tube!!

What signs do you look for when cleats are on their way out?

Depends on your cleats, i'm running SPD-SL and they are made of plastic, so they do wear down. you can feel they get looser on the pedals and there are wear indicators on them as well. As for standard SPD's i don't use them so don't know.

They get loose and you find yourself not being able to keep them engaged. They won't look worn down until you compare with some fresh out of the box. At least they looked OK to me before I took them off.

Pulled a foot out the other day on a descent towards a large roundabout. Done it before of course but this was the first time on fixed.

Mine usually look like iron age artefacts by the time I get around to replacing them.

I'd like to catch the bastard who hammers small stones into the heads of the allen bolts when I'm not looking.

Aye, he's a pain.

Squirts of GT85 and use of a watchmakers screwdriver from a Christmas Cracker to wiggle out the debris works after a few minutes.
