Back in June I went for a week cycling in Mallorca on my own. I would eat out every night.
It was interesting to watch the diners near by and their reaction to me. The men wouldn't make much of it, but their other halves would either give the "oh that's a pity...." Look or the " you must have had an argument and left her in the hotel you bastard!"
It kept me entertained.

Have had to eat alone occasionally when away for work and it's no great hardship, although some places make you feel more at ease than others.

Plus you don't have the person opposite you not ordering chips and then nicking yours - or declining a dessert and then asking for an extra spoon when yours arrives...;)

I'd usually rather eat alone in a hotel restaurant I might take a book or work paperwork, than get room service and raid the minibar, have done it quite often. In the US, I'd choose to go out to a food court if possible and eat. I'm not such a fan of eating in a hotel bar alone when there are groups on the lash though. Dunno maybe it's a male female thing again, and does depend on the country

I spent 2 weeks working in Chicago years ago, I have to say eating alone got pretty tiresome after that length of time

I have in the past got room service breakfast normally because of last minute panic on the presentation I have to give in the next hour or two! Otherwise I'll go and stuff myself at the hotel buffet breakfast!

It's nicer to breakfast or dine with a colleague or client though, do quite often travel with others. Especially when there's a beer or two with dinner (not breakfast)

Fortunately, I don't travel so much at the moment. 2012 was horrendous, my colleagues almost forgot who I was I was away that often!

I used to regularly go for an Indian or Chinese after work on my own. Sometimes I'd watch a film on my own afterwards as it was all in the same complex. I've never had a problem doing anything like that on my own.

I've toured solo a few times, and so dined alone. This has been in France, where it seems reasonably common. I think France has more travelling sales reps and the like - there seems to be a special hotel rate for VRPs.
It does have the problem that there's nothing stopping you having steak-frites and a bottle of red every night for a week. If you see that as a problem.

Edit - the spell checker tried to amend what I'd typed to a litre of red! It knows me too well...

I'm probably going to end up watching Star Wars alone, but I can cope with that.

I dine alone often, for work.

I travel a lot and room service seems even less social. Often a decent restaurant is the only opportunity I get to experience anything about the country, as to me, most countries consist of an airport lounge a taxi an office and a hotel.

But at home the closest I'll get is a Macdonalds. I've never "gone out" to a restaurant to eat alone at home
Same here, regularly dine alone. It;'s no big deal, I take my laptop and eat in the company of the CC family ....

Dining alone? You're never alone with a Kindle and a smartphone.

Seriously, week day nights for the last six months, I've perhaps had company maybe 10 times. I like it.

People do worry about the being alone thing..its great if you forget the 'what others think" and spend time with you.
i love doing just what i enjoy..i spend a lot of time doing what others want after all..

Next time you go into a restaurant alone, look around for the other lonely diners and turn it into a party.
