I NEVER use any solvents, oils, detergents or miracle-sprays on my rims.

Rims are too close to rubber tyres to risk impregnation by solvents, oils, detergents, miracle-sprays etc.

Clean water and a scrubbing brush.

Hang on, i use wd40 to clean the tyres aswell. Brings them up a treat, gets the white writing back up nicely aswell.
Makes you go faster in the wet aswell.

The 'black stuff' is a mix of alloy and pad - you'll get black stuff with any colour pads.

Wash off with car shampoo and water.....
Not necessarily, not all pads are the same - most of the black ones tend to be the powdery sort, not only do they wear down quickly they also make your rims/tyres mucky. My tyres have a reflective strip around them which you could hardly see until I cleaned them off and it's still not as visible as it should be.
