disappointment with well-known reputable dealer in Spitalfields market

I ordered in a new Specialized Sirrus Sport 2009 fo r a road test today however, when I went down to the very reputable (& well known) dealer today, I think they've built up the bike with a different spec to what's advertised on their website - the seat post and flat bar are black whereas on their website the "Sport" version clearly has a silver coloured seat post and flat bar.

after further research on the net, the standard Specialized Sirrus 2009 (cheaper so I presume lower spec) on has black seat post & flat bar the website .. the bike I rode today looked like it had grips like the cheaper bike as well

Will give them the benefit of the doubt and ask them to check that they have got the spec correct for the bike, but me being a Newbie I am now nervous that someone is trying to pull a fast one & sell me inferior bits attached to the better frame.

Any advice on what checks I should look for when I go back to the shop would be appreciated. I will print out the full spec but it all kind of looks the same to me!!

I'm not going to name any names as this could be an honest mistake of course

If it's the one that rhymes with Heavens they are a bloody nightmare. It is less likely to be an honest mistake than them not giving a rat's ar5e what they give or sell you.

I went to that very same shop back in 2007 when I was thinking of splashing the cash on a new bike and I also booked a trial of a couple of bikes. The first one turned up with Look pedals on it, even though I was assured they'd fit standard pedals so I could try it. So it wasn't exactly a satisfactory trial trying to tiptoe along without my feet skidding off the pedals.

The second one never materialised - well the right size never materialised. They couldn't get the right size in so got the smaller one in case I liked that one (how would I know without comparing it with the next size up???).

Talking to the guys in there was never a rewarding experience either. In the end I just gave up and got my deposit back.

If it's the other one, it may be a mistake, but again I wouldn't be too confident. However, you're likely to get at least some sense out of them if you do as Lee suggested.

Sorry, I know it's really confusing trying to negotiate all this when buying a bike for the first time, but from my experience I'd recommend that if you're not happy with something, don't pay for it or take it from the shop until you are happy. Once you're out the door in some of these places, they're really not interested.

That is interesting to hear you had a similar experience, it is the ryhming one you speak of.. I am willing to give them a chance but if they start insulting my intelligence I will walk out & take my business elsewhere. I might be new to buying bikes but I can read. Thanks for the warning signal.

Evans don;t score highly with people on here, perhaps the one in Waterloo CUt?

Prsonally I don't see the need to patronise them over independants, there's plenty of rated places in London for an important buy like this
