I'm fairly sure that the BBC and Westminster/the Establishment are very closely linked and what gets reported is determined not by a BBC editor but by what that BBC editor is told to report. No longer a public broadcaster but the state broadcaster.

I have to say that I thought it was an attempt by the media to minimise the Islamic State propaganda. I believe that the authorities see all these killings as propaganda to show on the news and drive people to call on governments to meet the IS demands and stop these killings. That was what I honestly thought. The other day there was something about another Brit and the report on TV was minimal. All the pictures that I guess IS wanted shown on TV were not shown or at least the newsreader said something to that effect.

I quite like France24 (in English), and when actually in France, BFMTV, despite only having schoolboy French. The BBC does have some terrible habits (such as its grovelling subservience to the monarchy, and thinking that football/golf is 'all the sport'), but on the whole it could be worse.

ITV is awful, particularly in the morning. It seems to be aimed at 'Hello' readers who've lost their glasses...

Many years ago now I received an email at my ITV employee account stating that every main national news programme would include a celebrity piece. It's been more than ten years since that email but I expect there may need to be one soon to suggest each new programme includes at least one actual news story. Never watch it. As others have said there are plenty of English language over seas produced news channels to work across for a balanced view. Not saying any in particular are right but they are all generally better than BBC/ITV main news programmes which are not for me. Channel 4 was always good but I don't get to see that any more.

Does the media lead the public or does the public lead the media?

Yes.

The BBC gets accused of bias from all sides often. It tends to be a national sport. I tend to believe that puts it in a reasonably neutral position. (This isn't the first thread about supposed BBC bias in CA&D). It's always worth cross referencing with Al Jazeera and CNN to get different angles, but having tried to get the Russian perspective on Ukraine from RT English recently, I'd have to say it's far better than we tend to give it credit for.

BBC IMHO tends to be a bit conservative (small 'c') but at least tries to be balanced. I'm sure others MMV.

I remember listening to Radio Moscow as a teenager and thinking what propaganda it was. Now the BBC comes across to me like government propaganda repeating the same sound-bites every 5 minutes, pushing the never-ending war on terror and permanent austerity.

I find the news/documentaries on RT, PressTV more balanced and informative.
