Dismantling 8 speed Campagnolo shifters

I’ve snapped the (plastic) shift lever on my bike on the left hand side. The levers are plastic/carbon - I’m not sure which so I guess with age / use they crack.

I have an older 8 speed pair with metal levers - and as far as I can tell they’re all interchangeable so I thought I’d have a go at removing the metal ones off my 8 speeds to use on my (ultra modern for me) 10 speed shifters.

I’ve started with the Right hand side because the left hand one is still on an old pair of bars and I’m replacing both anyway so this was easier (just before some eagle eyes member spots it’s the wrong side)

Anyway - I can’t get this bolt undone (circled). The one from the other side was a left hand thread so I’m not sure which way this one goes. I do know that it doesn’t seem to want to move either way.

I don’t want to force it - you can see the head has started to deform already - so just checking the hive mind to see if anyone has any advice or can tell me what I supposed to have done first in order to undo it!

Try a heat gun gently on it first just to see if it will give a bit and some proper penetrating fluid, not WD 40 and the alike.
Tricky as to which way it turns. Logic says to should be the other way to counter the movement. Good luck.

One of those shallow hexagon head sabotage bolts, I've seen many such on stems, some producers even bothered to round the beginning of the inside, decreasing the tools grip surface even more.
I'd try to support the part somehow then hammer (yes, The tool) in a (slightly larger) torx bit to try then.

At work I once used something like this to "press" in a bit into a damaged allen key head, with the bit held straight by a nut just fitting over it.

The plus is that there is fine control over the force, you can correct position, and the other side is supported.

Ok so I’m impatient and tried it straight away. Thanks @EckyH for the link - the shaft does indeed just tap out. Mine (8 speed Chorus) is not hex but has flat sides. No wonder it didn’t turn. I now have the metal lever I need which should- in theory- fit my 10 speed Chorus.

The Branford bike pages seem to suggest they are interchangeable from 1998 to 2008. I guess I’ll find out though. To be honest I thought 8 speed was around 1998 but having just googled it, it was 1991 but it looks the same as far as I can tell from the images. Realiry will tell. My left shifter needs to come apart anyway so I might as well try it. The 8 speed shifters have been in the parts bin for ages anyway.

Update in case someone searches for this.

It does fit.

I just can’t work out how to fit the spring shown so I’m going to go on YouTube later to find out. But it will work. 8 speed shifter blades fit on 10 speed.
