Upgrade grip twist shifters to trigger shifters on new to me Trek 7100 Multitrack 3x7 speed?

I was recently given an older Trek 7100 that is overall in good condition. The one issue is that the rubberized grips on the grip shifters have degraded to a black goo that gets on your hands like tar. Basically the bike in unridable unless you put on disposable gloves, otherwise you will have black goo on your hands for the next day or so no matter how hard you wash them.

I am going to wrap them in grip tape like people wrap around golf club or tennis racket handles and weight bars in the short term to see how I like the bike and if there are any other issues.

In the longer term I would like to replace the shifters to fix this right and would like to go to trigger shifters if at all possible. It looks like the rear 7 speeds are controlled by a SRAM 3.0 shifter and derailleur. The front 3 speeds are run by a Shimano C102 derailleur and twist shifter. I understand that this is not a high end bike and was not from day one but is a decent basic commuter or such.

I am not an expert on this type of thing but it looks like there are many factors to consider and that you cannot just use any 3 speed and 7 speed trigger shifter to perform this upgrade. I saw reference to the fact that I would need to purchase new old stock Shimano components from a source like eBay to perform this but no new parts are currently made that are compatible. I did watch a video where a guy used new Shimano Tourney shifters but then had to replace the cassettes. I don't know if that was needed or if they were incompatible parts. Since this was a free bike and not a real valuable one, plus most of the components are in good condition, I want to do this right but not replace otherwise good serviceable parts.

Anyone with more experience have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Conor

Given they all have the same pull ratio a pair of 7×3 trigger shifters should work fine.

I'd personally use a Shimano pair but that's my preference.

Yes, you can switch to trigger shifters. For your 3x7 setup, find a used Shimano 7-speed rear shifter (like Altus) and a 3-speed front trigger. They’ll work with your existing derailleurs and cassette. No need to replace other parts. Look for them on eBay or a bike co-op.

If you Google pull ratios for your SRAM 3.0 grip shifter it's 1:1 and you'll find Shimano is 1.7:1. I've learnt the hard way by spending an age trying to index the gears and they simply wouldn't. The boss at the bike charity stepped in and spotted I was mixing SRAM and Shimano and I was wasting my time. We swapped out the Shimano for SRAM and it worked. I know this goes against what's been said above but that was my experience of doing what you plan to do. Bankrupt bike parts website is worth looking at for NOS (new old stock). Either that or find a local bike charity. We have tons of used shifters. A lot get scrapped we have that many.

Your RD (SRAM X.3 btw), as said by @Big John, needs a SRAM (trigger) shifter, not Shimano. £11

If you go Shimano trigger shifter for the rear you'll need a Shimano RD (cheap). The spockets (whether freewheel or cassette/freehub) are compatible with both.

Two things:

A steel Trek 7100 may be an old bike, but if it fits you it will make an excellent tourer/utility bike.

There is a map and list of UK bike recycling charities on this site. You may find that you can get some decent shifters and a rear derailleur for a few quid from one of them. Then you will be recycling, upgrading supporting a good cause.

Yet again, rather disappointed (when will I learn) that this is yet another example of a new 'member' starting a thread posing a question and then never returning for the answer, at least logged in. they'd put a fair bit of effort into the OP but maybe it's just a scrip which they post on several sites.
We 'usual suspects' have been super helpful and I guess if people come along later and search, some of the info will be useful to them.
@DCLane - might be worth editing your post (to include need for a Shimano RD as part of the swap).

First, I would not consider going to trigger shifters an upgrade. Then, as far as gooey go, no matter what the type, dont get sun screen on them, that is what makes them all gooey. After putting sun screen on, wash your hands before you ride.
