Gonna have a go at ditching the cancer sticks in the new year.
Tried it once before with the patches. They worked until I came off them. Ended up having a crafty one which lead to another, then another. You know the scenario!

Really need to kick the habit. It's obviously killing me, makes me smell terrible and also not good for cycling.

Any tips guys?

Why wait?
Crush your cigs now and become a non smoker instantly.
What are you afraid of?
It's all down to you.

Different things work for different people. Cutting down definitely had no effect on me, I just kept going back up again. Once I decided I wanted to stop more than I wanted to do anything else, I found it easy. 33 years ago.

Although Pete may not realise it, i believe his thread was inspiration and a benchmark for the likes of me. I used it in my favour, in the sense that when you stop, for the most part you're doing it on your own. If you fail, you shrug your shoulders, youve only let yourself down, its a dissapointment etc etc, but thats it.
While being a 'member of Petes gang' and stopping at the same time, i felt i must'nt let myself and everyone else down The ante has been upped, its not just about you now, you're part of a gang. ^_^ . It gave me extra will to carry on, despite a couple of very tough weeks...
Very nearly one year on...ive still not smoked.
Cheers Pete :thumbsup::cheers:

Same applies, i posted on here on the thread ian quoted and that was my target.

A few of us stopped last year, and i know gbb and myself are still non smokers.

The mouth squirter worked for me, but the best tip was a drink of water.

Another week and it will be 1 year for me.

I have never felt better, and will never smoke again.

I wish you well.

I quit smoking 6 years ago. Started with patches, but living in a hot country back then, they were more of a pain than real help, so after a couple of weeks I threw them away.
A good friend who happens to be a GP gave me some good advice that helped me a lot.
He said I will have at least 5 daily "attacks" (strong urges to smoke). They will last 7 minutes each. During that period there are a few tricks to get you through: a./ the menthol effect -wash your teeth with menthol toothpaste or chew a strong menthol gum b./ the oxygen effect - go for a power walk, run, ride or anything that will increase your pulse for 5-10 minutes c./ the Vit C effect - get in some Vit C by eating an orange or have the fizzy C tablets.

Go for it! It's all in your head!
Good luck! :thumbsup:

The night i found out we were having a baby i stopped ,, no way was i going to be out of breath running around the park and playground as she grew up, so made the choice there and then , that was 4 years ago.

Its all in the head, if you want to stop and can focus on the goal its easy . if your "trying to stop" it doesnt work , you have to Stop , and thats it .

If this helps;

This year, I went to the funeral of a colleague, a smoker, who died of lung cancer. He was 40. It was as good a funeral as you could hope for, enlivened by the presence of his two children, aged 5 and 2...

BTW, I saw an ad on a bus the other day, for something called "Pre-Quit", with the strapline "For when you're getting ready to give up". It seems the endless striving of companies to find a product for every need we didn't know we had has reached its peak.

I've never smoked, so I know it's easy for me to say but... just quit. It's not impossible, millions have managed it. Just takes a little work. Pete's thread always seemed pretty inspirational when I looked at it.
