Divorce potential here - a footballing argument with my wife

In the red corner is my wife who says that Champions League medals are more important to a professional footballer than winning the World Cup

In the blue corner is me who thinks that lifting a World Cup is about as good as it gets - a lad from my old school did it and I've heard no complaints.

You're wrong, and that's all there is to it.

Your wife is probably right, but who's your schoolmate?

I can name most of the 1966 World cup winning team and I dont have an interest in football.

I dont know what the Champions league is. Is it the old European Cup?

Therefore your wife is wrong. Tell her I said so and she doesnt frighten me :0)

although the world cup would be the ultimate goal the fact is very few players will ever make a final as only a small number of teams/countries will ever win it..
so for most top players the champions league is their ultimate goal as its the only realistic medal most could win...

But which would they prefer?

International football is devalued compared to the past and alot of international games play second fiddle to big club games these days (the standard of football at top level club football is higher too) - but winning world cup is still the the pinnacle of the game and i think most players who have achieved both would pick it.

The champions league has become quite stale over the last decade with it looking more and more like a closed shop of super clubs when it gets to the later stages - paradoxically as the 'product' here becomes better it has also become overly predictable and boring. In the last few years the only teams that have really added a spark of unexpectancy at this stage have been Athletic Madrid and Borussia Dortmund....two huge clubs with great histories yet their success was like that of plucky underdogs such is the way things have been skewed in the recent past.
