The World Cup is more important because more humans have heard about it and know what it is.

And that's only important if England or Brazil win it.

if a player is lucky enough to have a chance of both then it would be a world cup medal, if they only have a chance of a champions league then that will be their priority, thats not to say they wouldn't love to win or dream of winning a world cup medal but if they know something is just not possible then they will elevate one over the other...

Exactly. However also to note is that a player has a choice as to which club he plays for, but cannot really make much of a choice on country (ignoring the Tony Cascarino precedent), and cannot have any material effect on how good their team-mates are (the Ryan Giggs conundrum). Whereas they do have the option of really shining and attracting the interest of the super-clubs where a Champions League trophy is a distinct possibility.

Hence I guess a professional footballer will dream of a World Cup medal, but strive towards a Champions League winner's medal.

For the vast majority of the World, Europe, your country then the World Cup is the only game that matters.
However for a typical club player, and therefore typical fanatical supporter,it's the top of the league that is far more important.
Which is a pity as some clubs turn down requests for the best players for the national team.

When the player has his great grandchildren on his knee, is is more important that he represented his country or some team that may have been moved to Milton Keynes decades earlier ?.

I would say that it would be nigh on impossible for any of the 'home nations' to win the World Cup in my lifetime. Given that, I would say that (for the UK at least) professional footballers would realistically seek to win the Champions League.

Very few English players even get a League Championship or FA Cup winners medal now as most of the top teams are made up of foreign imports.

Suppose you'd have to ask the players that have one of each. There can't be that many that fall into that part of a Venn diagram.
World Cup every 4 years. Champions League, well, you can have another go at it next year, quite feasibly with a different team, if you don't get one this year.

Some players highest achievement will be playing for their country, theres some at my Club (the Championship leaders at the moment ). They've got no chance of either of the medals mentioned.
