Do helmet cams put anyone off cycling?

I used a helmet cam for about a year or so. In that time nothing interesting/dangerous/compensation worthy happened. I don't bother any more.

Even if nothing interesting happened, I still would prefer to have it recorded all the time in the case of an accident... it would be resolved very quickly by viewing the footage to see whose fault it is, etc.

I think this has probably already been covered – but I’m sure some people who are already worried about cycling on the road would use head cam footage to re-affirm their belief that it’s ‘dangerous’. (It’s not, being alive is ‘dangerous’). I’d hope it doesn’t put anyone off cycling. If someone ever mentioned it as a reason not to cycle, I’d immediately point them to footage of the big cycling events – telling them to search ‘Dunwich Dynamo’ or similar. I’d then pull them out to the park, and let them see the ear to ear smiles on most London hire bike cyclist’s faces. I’d then take them on a gentle cycle down the Thames.

I'd then tell them to spend less time watching youtube ;)

Blimey, that land rover that nearly wiped me out or that lorry that came at me both happening within five commutes of each other (in 2010) were just worth filming and getting onto UTube.Never regretted filming the incidents like that. The left hook, two near collisions and the ambulance the other day.(this year)

Oh it does. You can't comment on other peoples bad behaviour on the road if you your self are not squeaky clean.

This is definitely a plus....

I was accused of jumping a red light and cycling on the pavement one morning by guy at work.

Asked which lights and then pick up the camera.

It is a junction which is quite wide. I had crossed on green, and the lights had changed as I crossed. When I exited the second lights were red..... and the pavement is coloured cycle path. So all above board, and wonderful to be able to simply disprove the claims.

The other thing is the "enforcement" angle.

I have successfully seen drivers prosecuted twice in the last year and have several drivers of company van who have been censured and one dismissed.

I have however not enforced anything. All I do is give the evidence of how that person has chosen to drive or to represent that company. Any "enforcement" is done by the Police or the Company

I like watching BM's channel and Gaz's channel is very good also.

Gaz's silly cyclist thing is very good and the video editing is very good.

Same:thumbsup:

I'll happily watch well put together videos with a meaning but long ago bored of just random clips of whatever had annoyed the film-maker.

Theres a motorcylist with an interesting channel - Premises123 or similiar. Good to get a view from another potentially vulnerable road user group.

Headcam footage don't scare me, cos I'm 'ard as nails like.

What does worry me about headcams is the thought of having a bad off and a metal and plastic cylinder being rammed through my skull.

Seeing someone getting t-boned and smashing their face into the road surface and hearing them scream out in pain isn't a good advertisement for wanting to ride on the roads, and is a little off putting, but without any shadow of a doubt it has showed me (in some cases) the rights and wrongs of my riding but I guess for every one knock off there is 100,000 good commutes / rides, has seeing someone get wrapped round a tree on a off road track or getting wiped out on the road put me off ???? No it's made me a better rider and more aware or what's around me.
