Do I cycle tomorrow?

I'm in Glasgow and cycled in today. It was actually OK, I'm riding a Ribble winter bike with 23s. There was a build up of ice/snow at the side of the road but in most cases I could avoid it . Unlike when I cycled in on Monday when the water in my bottle froze, my gloves were covered in frost and the cycle computer stopped working - that was not the weather to be cycling in but after 2 weeks out with the weather my fat gene was in overdrive. That said, it has got sharply colder since I arrived in this morning and here in the West End I have noticed that the rain from this morning is now turning to ice on the road, so cycling in was maybe not my best move ever!

Aye, It looked fine this morning and the main roads should be fine on the way home as well despite the drop in temp. However, the lack of sleep last night means it was the right decision today. I'll be on the bike tomorrow!

OK this morning in Manc land - well howling gale and rain.........

Snowed at lunch for an hour.......didn't stick much............

Riding home at 5-5:30, got on the side streets and my Hope light beam was bouncing back off the rod.........ICE.......... took the last few hundred yards very carefully.... Side roads are now ice sheets...........

Got cleaned up, went out......ice everywhere - used the grit bin to grit the hill.........freezing out there.

Back to the studded MTB tomorrow.

Cycled in today. It certainly was chilly and there was certainly ice around. I had to walk to the end of my street before getting on the bike.

Other than that the roads were fine (all main roads). Unfortunately I had to take the more direct busier route this morning, but I only had one HGV blasting it's horn at me as it overtook, so not too bad...


It's good to be back!!

I was expecting it to be 10 times worse in Edinburgh but yesterday wasn't too bad if you stuck to the main roads; some of the side roads would have been treacherous!

Despite yesterdays snow and the freezing fog this morning, I decided to take the bike today. There certainly was some slush around, but it was the very wet slush which means it is almost like cycling on a wet road, so it wasn't too bad.

However, due to how bad it looked (worse than it was) I was getting plenty of 'what a nutter' looks. I like days like that!

I went to bed last night with a forecast for -19c so prepared double overshoes and 4 layers (5th inc arm warmers), but woke up to a tiny -10c (3 layers, arm warmers, and single overshoes).

Compacted snow for the first rural half, came off within a few miles and slid up the road for what felt like another, soft landing no damage to either got back on and carried on without issue. Strangely I was thinking about falling just before I fell, so don't think about what if you fall or it might just happen

This is one reason why I don't use studded, so I don't end up on a cleared road with studded tyres... its annoying enough to have knobblies on when slicks would be perfectly fine.

Cycled for the first time on studded tyres last night ... wow it was really weird ... but I suspect my confidence on ice grew more than it should have, only felt the wheel slip slightly twice. This morning though Mr Summerdays has rang to report some of the side roads off the A38 were so slippy that he almost came off and ended up walking a couple of quick sections.

I was very happy to have studded tyres on this morning as the roads were either icy, compacted snow or on rare occasions just wet.
Also put my YakTraks on my shoes for the times I needed to put my feet down or walk on the slippery surfaces.

Look like they would sit on your shoe around the cleat recess...?

Although I thought you meant a full cover to stop snow getting in cleats etc, I would change to flats for any proper off road where I would get of or have to start on a slope etc... but used cleats this morning. Though I now make sure I have a tyre lever (today though it was a plastic spoon) handy so I can quickly clear pedasl/cleats out

In the car today, only because I have to go out after work for a meal with colleagues, and need to be home quickly to go out for a few beers with mates later on.

Took ages de-icing both cars...... solid ice on the inside of my car windows (result of lack of use as well).

Oh and I'm also cold in work today - nothing like a bike ride to keep you warm.

On the Brompton today (but mostly because I need it to get somewhere after work). Not too bad on the roads, but it was COLD! I forgot my buff and my ears were freezing!
(The scary, icy bits last week were in Livingston, not Edinburgh, BTW. They seem to have had quite a lot more snow here than in the city, too.)
