I've been looking into insurance.

if i join British Cycling I get £10,000 3rd party cover - but I was wondering if its really necesarry?

How many of you have it, and of those that do, have need to claim against it?

It's a bit more complicated than that...
It's £10 million, not £10,000. The fact that you get it chucked in for free with a £30-odd membership fee tells you how often it's used. The fact that it potentially saves you £10m if you get sued tells you that people think it's worth having.

Search for "cycleguard" - I've posted a rundown of insurance for cyclists a couple of times recently.

Like all insurance, you never value it until you need it.
I go with CTC, I reckon it's a small cost for a large potential benefit, especially the legal advice etc, though BC is good too. Many clubs will not let you ride without basic cover.

I'm with CTC.
And it has helped me with the copper who decided to use his van as a battering ram against me.

I would highly recommend the CTC if only for the legal advice, saying that they are helpful even if you are not a member.

I will be before I next go out on my bike.

Just sorted my house cover so I'm in an insurance frame of mind - was going to go with BC as you currently get £10 off through quidco.

...neither of which is anything to do with the £10m 3rd-party liability cover. Which is intended to pay out if someone sues you. Both of you will have been helped by a different benefit - the tie-in with the firm of solicitors and access to no-win no-fee legal expenses insurance.

IIRC some virtually all household policies will cover you for 3rd party whilst cycling.

Just had my M+S home contents insurance through. It's gone up £320 from last year as the replacement bike for my stolen Yeti 575 is specified as being over £4k.

So thank you to the thieving bastard scum that ram-raided my garage last November, that's £320 I could have put to much better use :cursing:

Rant over.
