I always hear how we are a lazy generation, (I'm 18) ...but how true is this?

Are computers to blame? Or is it the nanny health and safety state?

I despair sometimes at the lack of friends I have that are willing to do something adventerous or even cycle at a very very moderate pace somewhere very local.

No, fewer do.

I blame computers.

My son, who is 16, has just this minute surfaced out of his pit and has immediately buried his head in the computer.

I blame his father.
Shouldn't he be collecting GCSE results, or was that last year?

Yup, he can collect them any time after 1100 today but doesn't seem too keen to do so !

Based on previous track record he's got nothing to worry about though. I hope.

As a teenager in the 70s..we were out all day, walking, cricket, footie, climbing trees, you name it.....but there were'nt any distractions.
If we'd had computers, Wii's etc etc, we'd have probably been the same as 'todays generation'

Yup, agree with this.
Was a latchkey kid (can you imagine having a key on a string behind the letter box these days?). During the school summer holidays we were up and out at the crack of dawn and back for dinner at about 6pm, just filled our days with endless cycling, mucking about, making rafts on the local river, fishing, football, Tree Climbing, British Bulldog, scrumping, playing in the old bomb shelters or old derelict houses, buying a Red Rover Bus ticket and riding the buses all day. We never caused any trouble, smashed things up or be voilent just for the sake of it

Think you're right.

As a teenager in the 80s I was probably at the start of the "crossover" period between then and now. We did do all the out and about stuff, but the idea of the personal computer was just starting to take off (OK, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, but it worked for us!:blush:) and so that was indeed a distraction.

I've no doubt that if we'd had more gadgets, we'd have been more like the "yoof of today". Having said that, of course, not all of the yoof of today are like the stereotype .. the kids in our road (quiet cul-de-sac, granted) have been out all day every day across the summer holidays running about, building camps, riding their bikes and so on. And many of them will go on decent length walks and cycles with their parents.

I suspect a lot of it depends on how accessible a bit of space to run about is, and whether or not your parents can be bothered to take you there or if they are convinced a "peedo" is hiding behind every bush and so wouldn't let you out of the house in any circumstances. Ever.

There weren't any concerns for me either, but the car was still outside running at 10:30 waiting to take me in

Fear of litigation has devastated outdoor pursuits. I know a bloke who goes potholing and he tells me it's very rare to meet any young cavers nowadays because schools just aren't introducing them to the sport.

Have schools ever introduced kids to potholing? Not trying to be confrontational: genuinely curious. Mine certainly didn't.

Edit: I definitely agree that fear of lawsuits has a lot to answer for.

There's always room for improvement!!!

No, this was back in 2001 - parents were more interested in finding out how I'd done than me.
