Good post! Yes, I've seen some Pennine teams attending MTB events and a less fit-looking bunch I have yet to see. I can't help feeling that there's a stong element of macho egotism that makes some (not all) volunteer for these roles - the badges, the radios and the Land Rovers. On top of that they hope for their ten minutes of glory when they are in charge and nobody will dare to question or contradict them.

Watching programmes like Highland Emergency I'm constantly amazed at the reasons for which people will scramble a costly helicopter. Okay, a traffic accident victim or heart attack victim on a Hebridean island who urgently needs hospital care is one thing but there was even one episode where some kids lost in a wood in Scotland got rescued, FFS!

I think you are right. I was once invited to join SEBEV (South East Berks Emergency Volunteers); I have never seen a bunch of people so concerned with self importance, not to mention the size of the equipment (radios, land rovers etc). I just thought ‘Oh please! don't let us ever get into a situation where we actually need these people!’.

I became a cub-scout leader instead, and frankly your average 8 year old cub would be of more use.

Talking of which I wonder if the Scouts membership is dwindling or not? I had some great times in the scouts as a child.

My kids get plenty of exercise but then they're too young to refuse when I say we're going to the park or out on the bikes, for a walk, etc.

And they'll have a good time whether they like it or not!

+1.

Silverbow Jnr is always out and about. Okay, he is only 4 but he gets restless if he doesn't go out! "Daddy can we go to the Park", "Daddy can we go for a bike ride", "Daddy can we play football" "Daddy can we....".

So how do you get one of those lazy kids then?
