The group i belong to had an organised 'litter pick' event in the park yesterday. 2 local primary schools joined in.
In just 1 hour they collected 106 bags of discarded litter.
Its almost unbelievable.

Litter is everywhere people just drop the stuff where they please.
Cigarette butts also a problem in city centres.
We brought up our children to put sweet wrappers in their pocket and bring their litter home.
This worked very well but you had to check pockets before loading the washing machine.

Whereas now...

Some parents are actually teaching their kids that they SHOULD drop litter.

A friend of mine volunteered to take somebody else's young daughter for a seaside stroll. As they wandered along, the girl tossed her empty Coke can down on the path.

My pal: "Now, now - we shouldn't drop litter! Pick it up and we can put it in the bin over there."

Child: "NO - mummy says that we should drop the stuff so the rubbish men can come and pick it up. That is what they get paid to do and they would lose their jobs if we didn't give them something to do!"

Seriously...

Once one starts the rest follow.

The Lake District used to be clean because the sort of people who value it enough to part their butts from a car seat also value it enough to take their litter home. Then along came Covid, and the Lake District attracted the philistines who were only there for a staycation, and now it seems to be becoming a tip like everywhere else.

Thousands of people walk along the beach here in Brora but only a tiny minority pick up any litter... i ponder on why this is so....is society only concerned with gratification of some kind or maybe they think its beneath them. Can imagine a tourist posting their 'kudo's' pics on social media like..'heres me in a scenic location '' heres me enjoying the sun n surf' but not 'heres me picking up some garbage'

In rural East Anglia, periodically I used to go out of my own litter picking walks.

Gave up for two reasons:
1. One Sunday afternoon did a stretch of road that I happened to cycle along on Monday afternoon and it was back. In that short space of time more litter.

2. I'd take the old "single use" supermarket carrier bags (I still have a good stock) and passing houses if somebody was around I'd ask if I could put one in their bin? One walk I'd picked too much and it was heave and walked through a hamlet and every house I asked about a bag in their bin said "no" (and small bags (supermarket carrier bags, not large bin liners). Got home and my shoulders were really hurting from the load over such a distance. If people are that unhelpful "<swear words>..

The answer to this is the same as it is to many of life's similar problems, illegal bikes ridden by scumbags in balaclavas, people who don't pick up their dog's turd, pavement parkers, etc.

Police snipers on every rooftop would soon sort it.

There used to be a woman around here who posted photos on Facebook of her weekly litter picking, deposited in big pink plastic bags, but she hasn't been seen for must be over a year.🤔 Some locals did organise a dog mess collection a few weeks ago, collecting must've been two big bags of dog shoot!😲 Imagine that, putting plastic bags over your hands to pick up old, cold, fungus covered rotting dog shoot!!🤢🤮 Just like emptying dog poop bins, no way could I do it!!🙄

When i walk in the adjacent park i am pleased to say most dog owners have bags with them.
I have never had a dog so although I would like to take my daughters dogs for a walk i cant get my brain around picking up dog turds.

You two need to do a shift or two in an elderly care home and spend a bit of time cleaning up the doubly incontinent memory impaired residents.

A couple of times a week I'll take a bag and a grabby hand thingy on the daily dog walk around Belfairs. The council litter bins are spaced such that I can fill and empty a carrier for every bin I pass. There's a few of us that do it - completely independently, I just bump into fellow dog-walkers with grabby things too, and between us I'm pleased to say we keep the woods pretty tidy. However, when the school holidays come around, it'll be a bit more challenging.

A young lad riding in the unofficial MTB jump area (which is where the worst offenders are) offered to help out a couple of nights ago. There are still some decent folks out there!

I walk my dog Bertie up a dead end lane that leads to a hugh pig farm, I often see plastic drinks bottles and empty sandwich packets at the side of the road. These are clearly throw out by delivery drivers or the tractor drivers going up and down the lane.
