Obsession?

But as Martin’s stamina improved, so his enthusiasm rapidly morphed into obsession. Now, he’s out three times a week, sometimes for three hours at a time.

That doesn't sound obsessive to me. I'm sure we all know people who do a LOT more hours on a bike than that. Three hours will only take me about 40 miles, and I probably do that or more once per week, yet I certainly don't think I am obsessed. I know guys (albeit they are retired) who are out most days, and probably do at least 30 miles per ride; 70 to 100 miles if they are in the mood. You know who you are, if you're still lurking! :okay:

Whether it is an obsession or not is not related to how far one rides or to some extent how much time one spends riding.
An activity is an obsession if it encompass all his life, it is done to the detriment of other activities in life and sometimes get withdrawal symptoms or feel unhappy, uneasy or unsettled if the activity is not undertaken. Therefore my view is that, from the limited information provided, it is an obsession.

He's obviously got a fancy piece on the side who he rides off to see.

Going by your criteria, there's quite a few things I am obsessed with then .

It is a widely accepted criteria.
The important point is to be aware. It does not necessarily mean that obsession is a bad thing or it has to be "cured" as long as it has not grown in to a disorder. In that case, it interferes with normal functioning of life.

I ride more than that. Hardly that obsessional. Maybe the woman should buy a bike, get out on a few Breeze rides and see if she takes to cycling. I'm sure he'd do rides with her and slow down so that she can keep up.

Do any of you guys not recognise the author?

Mouth for hire Angela Epstein has become the latest celebrity opinionist attacking cycling with appearances on ITV and in the Telegraph. Graduating with an English degree Epstein has no expertise in law, road safety, engineering, policing or neurology to explain why periodically she is given a platform to agitate for cycle licensing, insurance, testing and compulsory helmets.
