Following on from the "How did you start commuting?" thread, I thought it would be interesting to find out how many people actively enjoy commuting rather than just endure it.

I know a bike commuting forum is a somewhat biased group but it'll still be interesting to see the results.

Much prefer it to sitting in the car going no-where. Even in adverse weather I enjoy it.

Some commutes can be a drag, especially if not feeling too good, but hey, it's a good way to keep fit and fit it into your routine, without having to faff about going to a gym.

Fossy's reply is spot on.

Just from the commute it's around 1.5 hrs, 3 times a week exercise.

Wot Fossy said!

Sometimes the hills get to me a bit. especially as it goes from sea level to 220ft in less than a couple of miles.

I absolutely adore it. So much so that, apart from the time spent at home with my family, it is the best part of my day. When I get up in the morning I look forward to it whatever the weather and it's the same when I'm nearing the end of a shift. Perhaps the fact that it's only 7 miles each way ( and 2 of them are quiet unlit lanes and farm tracks ) that makes so enjoyable.
When a colleague saw me putting on my wet gear and attaching my light he offered me a lift. " I go past the end of your lane"
"No thanks"
" Leave your bike here and I'll pick you up on the way in tomorrow"
"Honest mate no thanks"
"But why? You're gonna get soaked"
Me grinning " I know, I enjoy it "
Walks away shaking his head.

I love my cyclel commute. It's a 25mile round trip.. normally. In all weathers. But I drag it out every day to a 35 mile round trip. How do I know I love it? When it is pissing it down with rain or there is a massive headwind... I still find myself doing the long route rather then the short one. If for any reason I have to get a train to work i absolutely despise it...

Yes, I enjoy it. I even enjoyed it at about minus double digits without thermals when you add on the windchill from cycling.

I've been commuting by bike for the last thirty years and its now just part of life's routine. I enjoy it when the weather good, but not so much when the weather bad, occasionally I don't enjoy it at all. Just before Xmas when all the snow was on the ground I was going out to work as my neighbour was coming in, he said "your not cycling in that are you?" I said "I need to get to work" he replied "you must be brave" my reply was "no I just need to get to work" I then rode of leaving him looking puzzled.

I'm lucky in having a lovely coastal and rural commute (this is a lovely spot). It's two of the best parts of my day (even in 70mph gales

) and sets me up nicely for work. I find that without the ride I don't feel fully awake in the morning.

also in the snow it became a whole new challenge. I don't always enjoy riding up the hill home into a Northerly headwind on a Friday though

yes weirdly really enjoy it even to a point where i feel guilty if I have to take car sometimes. During the recent ice age we had where i took the sensible choice of driving I'm praying for snow/ice to bugger off. Even to a point where i was musing about moutain bikes or snow tyres!!
Yes the wind can be wicked and in the mornings you sometimes need to have plenty of willpower. The ole looking out the window 'shall I, shant I?' moment!!

Awww... Sounds like he wants company. It can be intensely boring driving a car along the same road twice every day. Don't be tight. Why don't you offer to let him join you? (I don't mean a backy!)

Doubt he'd go for it as he lives 18 miles away and by his own admission, hasn't ridden a bike since he was a teen, 20 years ago.

Might be able to sell him on the idea of getting a bike on the BTW scheme, drive to ours with the bike in the car and cycle in with me from there.

Found I couldn't tick the first one as sometimes I don't enjoy a journey if I get really really cold for example ... and get to the point when I want an uphill section to get the blood circulating better. There are also occasions when I'm sitting at home and I look out and think do I have to (being a lazy soul at heart)... have to say that the good thing about the commute is you do have to ... ok I could take another option but within 10 seconds of setting off I'm normally thinking actually it isn't that bad out, and isn't it great on the bike... (it helps I start with a short downhill section!!).
