Do you have a winter commuting bike?

My main bike is my pride and joy, a Trek 5200 in US Postal livery. A bit pretentious I know ! but I do love it. xx(

Now been commuting for 4 weeks solid, done just over 600 miles, can't help but think that come winter and the bad weather etc its going to take its toll on the bike.

Or am I just being a girls blouse and it will be ok? and it will just need servicing and wear and tear replacements, or do you park your good bike up for the winter and get some crap out the garage?

cheers folks for the replies

I have a better idea, frame it and hang it in your living room.

you must get a second bike!!! there is no better reason than saving the bike from the cruel winter months, the bike will be ruined if you dont get another one xx(

Yep. You NEED a new bike. NOW! You have to get it now so that you can get it setup right for the winter. Also, in the spring you will need a replacement for theTrek. That way you can use the winter bike for commuting, the Trek for winter training/bad weather and the new bike for events/ sunny days/ races.

Have you thought about time trialling?
Cyclo cross is good for winter fitness.
Mountain biking is great for getting a smoot pedal action
Fixed is ideal for urban riding

THere you go, you were thinking about 1 new bike but it's clear you need at least 6 new bikes.

Kept my MTB for a winter commuter when I got my road bike, but well over a year later the MTB has never moved from my bedroom.

The road bike's just too good a ride in any weather to leave it sitting forlorn at home 'cos it's not sunny.

OTOH, if I was to sell the MTB and get a nice wee lightweight hybrid for winter.....

Erm...have 4 bikes.....but 1 for commuting.

1 of the road bikes I have used for commuting, 1 I will never use.

The other is my MTB, that was my commuter until about 2 month's ago - it's now back to off road duties.

I have a commute bike as I do not want to leave my carbon bike at work and some of the commuters on the train show no respect for the bike. I think it would be damaged quite quickly. However, I now have 2 x winter commuters. I think I will sell the old Ribble.

don't have a winter commuter bike, just the hybrid, which gets used for commuting, really naff weather and family rides.

the road bike is used in good weather but has also been out in some really naff conditions.

as neither bike is really top of the range (or even middle of the range) then I'm not too bothered about them getting mucky. i am starting to get the itch for a much better road bike and then the current one will be the winter/wet weather ride. the hybrid will always be an all year round commuter.
