My main bike is my pride and joy, a Trek 5200 in US Postal livery. A bit pretentious I know ! but I do love it. :?:

Now been commuting for 4 weeks solid, done just over 600 miles, can't help but think that come winter and the bad weather etc its going to take its toll on the bike.

Or am I just being a girls blouse and it will be ok? and it will just need servicing and wear and tear replacements, or do you park your good bike up for the winter and get some crap out the garage?

cheers folks for the replies

Kev

Good God, man, I have a whole garage full of bikes! As soon as the weather changes, even ever so slightly, I run as fast as I can to the nearest cash machine, empty my account (it's so urgent that I am scrabbling at the money before its even started to come out of the machine), then I run to my local bike shop, hurl the cash at the 16-year-old assistant with his mouth hanging open and I scream at him, "Give me another god-damned bike!! Can't you see the weather's changed?!".

(I am, of course, being incredibly facetious, in a very over-the-top kind of way ...).

Yep. You NEED a new bike. NOW! You have to get it now so that you can get it setup right for the winter. Also, in the spring you will need a replacement for theTrek. That way you can use the winter bike for commuting, the Trek for winter training/bad weather and the new bike for events/ sunny days/ races.

Have you thought about time trialling?
Cyclo cross is good for winter fitness.
Mountain biking is great for getting a smoot pedal action
Fixed is ideal for urban riding

THere you go, you were thinking about 1 new bike but it's clear you need at least 6 new bikes.

What kind of advice do you call that? Surely he needs a folder, as well?

I have one bike that I'm 'precious about' and I think commuting on it would be a total waste.

The others get ridden in pretty much any conditions.

Surely not riding it would be a total waste?

I'm joking of course, I haven't yet saved up enough to own a bike worthy of being precious about.

Last years winter hack (recycled bicycle). I always have a winter hack for two reasons one it saves damage to the good bike and two it’s a good excuse to the misses to get another bike. You could always use your normal bike but you will need to constantly be cleaning it to keep the salt off. I always have a hack bike that lives outside my front door, I just get on it and ride this saves fighting my security personnel (German Shepherds) to get out the gate plus also gives me a bike I can leave around town without worrying about how much of it will still be there when I get back!

I have my best bike for year round commuting, my second best for spare and a third bike as a long term project to refurbish that will probably never happen. All are audax/tour commuter thingies though, nothing fancy just expensive.
