what about deaf people? are they not allowed to ride bikes? what about old people with lowered hearing levels? if i understand it correctly, it's the cyclists fault for listening to music? does that mean that if a driver is listening to music hits a cyclist he is automatically guilty?

I think it depends on road behaviour.I've seen some dodgy behaviour from people not using headphones.(Haven't read article yet)

However CTC, the national cycling group, argues that people should be left to make their own judgments. “We encourage deaf people to cycle so we don’t think it’s essential to hear traffic in order to ride,” said a spokeswoman. “You have to be sensible. The most important thing is that you look around you all the time — especially over your shoulder.”

^This. I first started using headphones, the little mini ones in 1985.I try not to make it too obvious to motons im wearing headphones.

The most important thing is that you look around you all the time — especially over your shoulder.”

^This.I do it a hell of a lot.

Boom, boom, boom from SCORES of crappy clio's, nova's and fiesta's up and down the country, and the fact I listen to music (quietly) and can still hear and see traffic around me (aided by a mirror) means if I bought that paper I'd wipe my @rse with it.

Why would you want to listen to music on abike in the first place? Surely that just makes a vulnerable road user more vulnerable. Cycling is interesting enough Without assaulting your ears with all that rubbish.

Being a deaf cyclist myself I have had to adapt my riding for my poor hearing. I use lots of shoulder checks and lifesavers similar to that I have used when I have ridden my motorbike. When you cannot hear the traffic life savers become all the more critical.

Kerchiing

And the car/van/truck/bus drivers with bluetooth phone headsets?

No, much easier to pick on cyclists than get their own house in order. Also much easier to blame the person killed than put the onus of responsibility on the person guiding tons of metal at high speeds through congested streets.

And for anyone that feels I am doing wrong, and that I aren't aware of my suroundings, I challenge you to try and creep up on me when on the bike without me noticing.

You WON'T.;)

Presumably the mirror is a rear view mirror and not a hand held make-up mirror ?
