Do you name your bike?

I gave my Raleigh 20 some very interesting names a few months ago when I came out of the shop to find I had two flat wheels. I can't repeat them here though in polite company. I had even more names for the kids who had unscrewed the valves....

I could see the funny side when they gave me back the valves

Haven't named the bike. But I named a big hill thats near the start of most of my rides. He is called 'the beast'. 'The beast' is a tricky fellow. He likes to tear the legs off of his victims for fun. I try to tame 'the beast'. It is a love hate relationship.

No. I went through a brief phase of having a name for my car when I had a series of Citroen 2CVs, but it didn't last long.

I normally name things if their model name is dull or they only have a number (e.g. Trek 6500). Where something comes with quite an idiosyncratic name I keep it (e.g. Kona Kikapu). That said if a friend also had a Kikapu I'd have to change her name (or buy a more obscure bike).

Anyway, as to the original question: No, I don't generally name my bikes, but one came with a name. He's Mon. Blériot

On a related note, a woman used to come into a shop I worked at who called her bike something like Cecelia. The first time I met her, she came in and, out of the blue, asks: "Is Cecelia ready?" I stared at her blankly.

When I'd finally figured out what she was on about, I brought out the repair and she starts gushing over the bike like an imbecile .... "Ohhh, hello Cecilia, there's my girl; do you feel better now?"

Bizarre!

My bike's called Liesl. My car (a corsa) is called Cav after Mark Cavendish. Always makes me laugh.

I hope I'm not treading on too many toes, but through life I have always noticed that women tend to name and give personae to cars and so on. Now I know there will be exceptions to the rule, and no doubt some men will name them, but as a general rule am I right? Men tend to refer to the car, bike and so on by the make or model or both, as in "I'm off to take the Bee Emm for a spin", or "We drove up from Birmingham in the Alpha....", " I spent all last weekend on the Cube..." "Think I'll turn up to the club bash on the Spesh Triple" etc.

What's more, women tend to give them affectionate sort of names (such as Harriett in the example above). My wife used to have a Datsun named Des for example. Could I therefore ask the ladies whether they agree?

I would probably agree with you but there are plenty of blokes on this forum who give names to their bikes, at least. And I agree we're generally more affectionate towards completely inanimate objects. Which is ridiculous, bt it makes us happy.

I don't understand it, myself. I still have friends on the Citroen 2CV club scene, and all their vehicles have names, which they use - ie "we drove up in Angus"; "we're in Victor this weekend". "The bike" or "the car" is about it for me. Even my narrowboat didn't have a name - well, it did, but only because someone else had christened it. Its name was never painted on it while I owned it, and to me it was just "the boat".

I don't have names for my bikes as such, but I do always say good morning and good night to them when I open/lock the shed, and I do say well done to whichever one I have been riding that day.
